Primal Scream - Give Out But Don’t Give Up (the Original Memphis Recordings)
Sony records, original UK pressing 2LP - 2018
is between essentially the same record... I’m the early 90’s Primal Scream releases a legendary record called Screamadelica. A dancey, dubby, psychedelic rock pop record that was often referred to as a master piece.
So, how do you follow up such a record?
The band decided to fly to America and record a rootsy, soul record in Memphis. Produced by the late legend Tom Dowd (Aretha Franklin, Al Green etc.). The band was pleased with the results... unfortunately Creation label head Alan McGee didn’t feel it was the right record to follow up. So he took the tapes and sent them out to be re imagined and the result was the record on the left... (probably the right at the time move IMO)
And the record did very well. One of the highlights is the song Rocks that I still play to this day in most of my sets. It’s a rare song that even though it’s largely unfamiliar to most it still gets a great reaction. Very rare in today’s DJ world.
Now fast forward to 2018... the band (along with a documentary crew) decided to fly back to Memphis after hearing a cassette version of the original mixes. Sadly by this time Tom Dowd has pasted... but original engineer Jeff Powell is there to cut a disc directly from the masters. The result is incredible. A record that oddly doesn’t skip a musical beat in today’s musical landscape.
For the few who are familiar with both... which mix do you prefer?? Ps. Check out the documentary... so good!!! #primalscream #giveoutbutdontgivein #creationrecords #scotland #london #memphis #tomdowd #alanmcgee
